The spectacle at the Yas Marina Circuit capped a memorable season for Vettel and Red Bull, who also claimed the constructors championship in Brazil. The close of the season leaves motor racing enthusiasts the world over satisfied at F1 returning to its best and contemplating the potential of the 2011 season to produce as much excitement, technical and driver innovation and sublime entertainment that was in such large measure in 2010.
Jenson Button’s attempt to recapture the World Championship came to an end in the penultimate race in Brazil and as the season came to its climax at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alonso led Webber, Vettel and Hamilton in the standings with all four drivers still capable of winning the title.
After a thrilling qualifying session, Vettel led Hamilton with Alonso third followed by Button and Webber respectively. The McLaren's showed great race pace with a car excelling with its straight line speed. The finale of a remarkable F1 season was equal in intensity and desire with all four drivers showing every bit of talent and will to win. From the start, Alonso's grip on the title started loosening as he lost 3rd place to Button and then after an ill timed pit stop, he found himself in 7th with Webber just behind him. Needing at least 4th place to secure victory, should Vettel hold out for the race win, Alonso had little left to offer. So from 3rd position in the title standings prior to Abu Dhabi, Vettel crossed the line to win the race and claim the World Championship for his first time. Considering Vettel had never led the title race at anytime, he left his best until last edging out Hamilton and Button on the day to complete a deserved and historic victory.

Team orders, whilst becoming illegal for the 2010 season were on display just one race later at Hockenheim. Filipe Massa led a brilliant race in the German Grand Prix and could have posted his first win of the season were it not for the interventions of his superiors. Ferrari race engineer Rob Smedley came onto the radio with what appeared to be a strong intimation, “Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm you understand?” Just a few moments later Alonso passed his team mate which was proceeded by Smedley commenting, “Good lad. Just stick with it now. Sorry.”
Even before the season began, there was growing anticipation that Formula 1 would produce an outstanding season, especially with the potential for in-team competition. World Champion Jenson Button lined up with fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton who preceded Button to the World title the season before, in an all British team at McLaren.
Controversy, at one time frustrating for those on the wrong end of it, at the same time adding entertainment value for the spectator, is a common facet of Formula 1. The 2010 season was no exception. Aside from the modifications in the early part of the season, Red Bull were at it again when a new front wing split the team in two and showed which side the team’s bosses favoured. Sebastian Vettel damaged the new addition on his car in practice and subsequently the team felt it more advantageous if the German be given Webber’s wing. Webber was disconsolate yet, as the gods would have it, the wing did little to aid Vettel as through gritted teeth and sheer determination, Webber stormed to victory in the British Grand Prix. After crossing the finishing line, Honer attempted to sweeten the relationship by saying “Now maybe we'll get a smile from you.” Webber simply replied, “Not bad for a No 2 driver!”

The season continued with the number one spot changing hands on numerous occasions, firstly seeing Webber eclipse Hamilton before Alonso made a sterling comeback to lead the pack up to the final race. The battles remained tense, exciting and sometimes explosive affairs throughout the rest of the season as the top five drivers challenged for the title, all with confidence in their cars and a self belief in their abilities to clinch the top prize.
Ferrari received a $100,000 slap on the wrist from the FIA with the footnote from the governing body suggesting they would revisit the rule as team orders might be an F1 tradition that may be too difficult to bury.

Five Drivers Battled for the Title
As the Formula 1 season closed seeing Sebastian Vettel win his first World Championship title, nobody could have predicted the way the annual fest of speed, power, technology and driver ability panned out. For too long F1 has plodded along with one or two dominant teams with massive budgets winning titles due to car superiority. Not this season. It was explosive, entertaining and utterly brilliant. 2010 will go down in history as one of Formula One’s best yet.
Yet the build up to the season saw Red Bull surprising the competition with a very fast car. Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel were hoping to eclipse the previous season’s good showing with a lot more race wins and a possible world title. Red Bull pushed the limits on what they could get out of their car which saw McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh calling into question the legality of the Red Bull cars’ setup for qualifying. The FIA found no fault,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Christian Honer, Red Bull chief stated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “The FIA are totally happy with our suspension. They didn't find any system that controls the ride height other than standard springs and dampers. There is no system on our car. It's as simple as that.”
The prospect of a Button v Hamilton season long tussle was overshadowed by the return of arguably the greatest driver in Formula 1 history. Having been repeatedly suggested in previous seasons, 2010 finally saw the come back of Michael Schumacher, teaming up with fellow countryman Nico Rosberg at Mercedes. Fernando Alonso, another undoubted class act was also looking to return to winning ways with an enhanced Ferrari.

Vettel Wins Title to Cap a Formula One Season to Remember As the F1 season drew to a close, one thing was for sure; Formula One in 2010 was back in the business of sports entertainment and back at its best.

Sebastian Vettel Crowned World Champion in Final Race
In spite of Red Bull’s early show of speed, mistakes and inconsistencies saw Ferrari and McLaren benefit at the season’s inception. Alonso took the first race at Bahrain before World Champion Button showed why he was every bit as capable of retaining his crown with two wins in the first four races. Mark Webber was next to put himself in the mix with wins in Spain and the coveted Monaco Grand Prix. Yet as the Red Bull’s started turning sheer pace in Grand Prix victories, Hamilton scored two back to back wins in Turkey and Canada throwing the competition wide open albeit thanks to Red Bull’s in-house battle reaching boiling point when Vettel appeared to run into Webber in Istanbul.
This would not be the first time Red Bull’s ingenuity in technical advances became controversy when the flexibility of their front wing supposedly creating more down force by bending at the sides was also a bone of contention for opposing teams. Whatever criticisms the team received, it did little to impact on their speed and ability to qualify well for races.
